Flow Chart Foam - Adobe After Effects Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

First of all you have two choices, start by creating an original and alpha in Photoshop or create the outlines and then import them into AE and color them there. The first pic below is the artwork we will use. The second is the alpha channel that the foam or bubbles will flow down in. When you make the alpha channel make sure to soften with a Gaussian Blur.

Make sure the artwork is on the bottom.

Select the alpha layer and open Foam.

Begin by choosing Draft+Flow Map.

Go to Flow Map and choose your artwork which in this case is indisgestion.jpg.

Move the effect point to the top of the screen. Zoom out at this point to see if your flow map fits the screen. If not, scale it up. Set View to Rendered.

Under Rendering select a bubble type. Hit the Space Bar to view.

Open Physics and select Initial Direction and Wind Direction and set the direction to 180 degrees. Hold the Shift key down while twirling the spinner down to give yourself an accurate number.

Crank the Initial Speed up if you don't see the bubbles.

Crank up bubble Strength so they don't pop.

Set Size Variance to 0.

Turn Viscosity up.

Turn Stickiness up.

Crank down Flow Map Steepness. At this point Render and see if you need to fix anything. I've decided to reduce the Production Rate to 2.0.
