Start by creating a rectangle.

Duplicate the rectangles and specify different colors.

Select the Knife Tool and make some cuts on the rectangles. Change some colors.

With all the pieces selected, drag onto the Swatches palette to create a pattern.

Create a new square. Click on the new pattern. Apply the new pattern as a stroke.

Open the Styles palette. With the square selected that you just committed the stroke to, click on the New Styles icon at the bottom of the Styles palette. Try it out on something.

This was supposed to be text. Select the box you that you used to make the new style. Select Stroke and reduce the size. Now go ahead and make another new style. Now apply it to the text.

Create some dots and drag onto the Swatches palette to create a pattern. Go ahead and make a new style from the pattern as I showed you above.

Apply the new style to an image which this case is some text.

With the image selected, press Expand Appearance. Press Expand and OK.

Select a letter. Press Expand. Using the Direct Selection Tool, go into the image and change some colors. What I'm showing you here is how to go into a Style and make changes.

If you use the Selection Tool and highlight the image, you'll see a variety of tiles. Here is the result of manipulating a style.
