Brush Magic - Adobe Photoshop Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

Let's start by selecting the Brush Tool (B).

Once you select the tool, this dialogue box pops up at the top below the menu. Click on the little arrow next to Brush.

Immediately you'll see a drop down box with a wide variety of brushes. To see more of the brushes, scroll down. To add more brushes, click on the circle with the arrow in it at the top and select the other brush categories. In this version of Photoshop, the most outstanding feature is the incredible remake of the brush options. Go ahead and select brush #55.

Click one time on the paper. You'll notice that the size of the brush is static. Now, press the ] bracket several times. You'll discover that you can increase the size of the custom brush. This is a new feature. Previously you could only use the bracket to increase standard brushes.

Let's try it with another custom brush. This time I am using the Azalea brush or brush #69. This feature works with all custom brushes. You can use the [ bracket to decrease the size as well.

Clicking on the arrow will give you a many options to choose from including Preset Manager. You can Reset, Load, Save, or Replace the existing brushes. You can create a new brush or delete one. You'll notice that you also have more brush categories to choose from. Go ahead and select Calligraphic Brushes to replace the current brushes.

Select brush #20.

You'll notice something completely new at the top of the screen. See the tab that says Brushes, click on it.

Up pops the Brush Preset screen.

Check Shape Dynamics. Don't make any adjustments. See how the brush changes.

Try doodling with this brush to see the effects. Look at the change in style from the generic format.

Just move the little arrow markers around to see the different effects.

Below is a sample of some of the readjustments made to one brush. Remember, you can reduce the size of the brush by clicking on the brackets. Have fun.
