Make a New Photo into an Aged Newspaper Photo - Adobe Photoshop Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

September 2004

1 Below is the photo I'll use for this project. It's one of a large library of slides I possess. What we are attempting to achieve is to make this current or modern photo appear to be old and aged such as what an old newspaper photo might look like. Before starting, always make a duplicate layer in case you make a big mistake.

2 Select Film Grain for the first step. Grain will be set at 4, Highlight at 6, and Intensity at 3.

3 Before proceeding, choose Fade and set to 55%.

4 Now use the Add Noise filter and set it an Amount of 15.06%, Uniform, and Monochromatic.

5 Set the colors as shown below.

6 Apply the Clouds filter to the picture.

7 Now select Fade and set to Hue.

8 Select Grain and set Intensity to 24 and Contrast to, then set the Grain Type to Vertical.

9 Fade to an Opacity of 40%.

10 Select the Dodge tool and set it to Midtones with 100% exposure. Use a fairly large round soft edged brush for this step. Lightly go over the picture once. Try not to cover the whole picture. Then select Hue/Saturation and adjust the Hue if it's not right. Lower the Saturation and increase Lightness.

11 The photo should look somewhat like the one below depending on your Hue/Saturation settings. Compare the original in the corner. This would really be a good technique to use for family portraits where everyone dresses in old fashioned clothes.
